If you want your marriage to last tell her to calm it down or she is gone. | A few questions for breastfeeding moms ... re: leaking; hunger; sleepiness (sorry, long post!)? Hi fellow-Moms...
I have a few questions that might seem silly to you guys, but I have a daughter who is 4.5 now, & was strictly formula-fed ... so now, with my 2nd baby, this breastfeeding thing is really foreign and confusing to me at times. Plus, my mom didn't breastfeed, I don't have any sisters to steer me in the right direction, & not many of my friends nurse either (in fact, most don't even have guys yet!) So I'm not really sure who to ask this kinda stuff to ....?
Anyway - my son wasn't gaining weight from my breast milk at first so his pediatrician pretty much insisted that I supplement with formula, much to my dismay. I had put so much effort into breastfeeding at that point that I was really ticked off I couldn't just stick with it solely -- and that the doc (who had encouraged it SOOO much to begin with!) was now not supporting me entirely. We had to do what was best for the babe though, right? And the poor thing had gone from 6 lbs. 4 oz. (birth weight) to 5 lbs. 5 oz. in six days, so they were gonna hospitalize him for testing if we couldn't get 'im up in the next day or two -- and the hubster & I were willing to do ANYthing to prevent that if we could, of course. (And thank goodness, upon return 2 days later, he had gone up a healthy 7 ounces and after one other set-back the following week, has been gaining steadily ever since). Phew!
And ya know, as it turns out, I don't mind supplementing that much at all. It allows my husband to help out, yet I don't have to pack bottles or move from the bed in the middle of the night if I don't want to since he likes to nurse as much as he likes the bottle. The baby, I mean. Not my husband, ha ha. (Though I doubt he would object much these days since he's feeling awfully "neglected," lol. Then again, he doesn't have stitches on HIS goodies either, so too bad, buddy!) :-)
ANYWAY ... as it turns out, nursing seems to be more of a "comfort" thing for the babe. It soothes him right to sleep, so he typically nurses before napping (which is a LOT, since he's not quite a month old yet) & bedtime. Or if he's just being fussy & uneasy for whatever reason (which seems to be a lot too. Little bugger's definitely fussier than our first!)
We JUST got a breast pump a few days ago, and since I'm still producing a good bit of milk, and haven't really dried up at all, I plan to try replacing some of the formula-feedings with expressed breast milk to see if he'll still get the calories that he needs to continue gaining. (Because as I said earlier, he's back on track again, thanks to the formula -- well up over 7 lbs.)
That being said, now that you know our "story" and how often I nurse him ... when can I stop wearing these stupid nursing pads under my bra? I live in a very small town & went to five different stores before he was born to purchase a nursing bra, not ONE of which had any (ridiculous, isn't it?!) I was gonna get some online, but didn't have time before he came, since he ended up being induced early ... so in a pinch, I tried wearing a sports bra (that opens in the front), & I've ended up really liking them ..... not sure I want or even need to switch at this point? I'm busty as it is, and they provide "ample" support (no pun intended!) ;-) and because the snaps are in front, they keep things simple for feedings.
Maybe it's different for everyone, and maybe its because we're not necessarily on a nursing "schedule" yet, but are these nursing pads something I need to wear for the whole duration of breastfeeding him? Or does the spontaneous leaking (squirting!) stop in due time? (It especially seems to happen when I hear another baby cry, silly as that may be? Also happens to one boob while he's eating off the other.) Is that normal? Does it EVER stop doing that while I'm nursing or will it continue until I stop? I need to head to the store to get more nursing pads tomorrow, and I'm wondering if I should stock up or if this business will stop after another box of 'em or so...?
And since I'm on the subject -- if I've managed to keep your attention this long ... is it also normal to be hungry (as in FAMISHED) all the time while nursing?? I can't get enough! Here I am trying to lose the baby weight, and all I can think about is FOOD. Anyone else go through that too? Or do old pregnancy habits die hard, and its just in my head ... or what?? :-)
Okay, and just ONE more thing: while nursing the baby, I get VERY drowsy. I've even dozed off in the rocking chair with him in my arms, and I wake up shocked and scared that I fell asleep in the first place! Grant it, I know a lotta new moms are tired from the lack of a normal sleeping routine, but I'm napping enough when HE naps that I'm not dead-zombie-tired. It just seems that a few seconds after I start to breastfeed -- my eyes get heavy, my body starts to relax, and I can barely stay awake. I hafta try and fight it the whole time! And I can get through a bottle-feed | Ack, I can't post my answer for whatever reason, I keep getting an error page. :(
Ah Ha! That worked, let me add the answer now and a star:
Hi there momma!
Thanks for sharing your story- a great read and such a joy to see such love & dedication. :)
Hooray for you for sticking with it! :D Nothing you asked or mentioned is silly at all. I know how you feel not having anyone really to ask about breastfeeding. Is there a La Leche League group in your area? It's worth checking out (awesome resource of breastfeeding mommies!!):

As for the nursing pads, I can't remember exactly when I stopped wearing them, I think it was around 5 months. One day I just stopped leaking-- I was amazed! I have a big box of them left. Two friends of mine are going to give birth soon so I'm going to divvy them up. :) I just bought the Lansinoh big box at the store. I considered buying them in bulk online but never got around to it. You eventually will stop leaking too, we just don't know when that will be. ;) Now, sometimes I go braless around the house (when I'm washing my bras) and whichever side I'm holding my baby on will be soaked. I think the weight of him on the unsupported breast causes a leak. LOL It's the craziest thing!
Oh gosh yes I thought I was going to eat myself silly I was always so hungry the first 5 months of nursing! So I ate and kept hydrated. I lost baby weight and then some (sweet surprise!!) so listen to your body!!
You are not alone with being drowsy while nursing. Hormones are released during nursing which help you become relaxed, add that to being a tired momma and it's no wonder we fall asleep. I admit after 9 months I still doze sometimes when nursing my LO. Usually it's right before his bedtime. Sometimes after his afternoon nap. In the beginning with the constant night feedings I was so sleepy I would fall asleep while nursing. I tried hard not to but my baby was a slow nurser and I couldn't help it. It makes me nervous still. I make sure he's secure and that he can't be smothered by boobage.
Of course it's sweet, sweet liberty to nurse while lying down. :)
Keep up the awesome work!! |
